Home-based Learning Programs

Dear parents and guardians,

Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the world is anticipating a “new normal” in all facets of life, including our children’s education.

In response to the call of the times, DUYAN used to offer two additional modes of delivery outside of the traditional system, namely, Homeschooling and Distance Education.  The Virtual Campus system that we tested and rolled-out toward the end of SY19-20, due to the Quarantine and eventual Lockdown, is very much related to the Distance Education system.  Please find below short definitions of both systems.

Thank you very much.

Homeschooling – Homeschooling occurs when parents take charge of their children’s education —

organizing subjects, teaching lessons or arranging for tutors, evaluating progress, and supervising social contacts. (Bauer, 2009)

  • It can be in one of four types of programs, i.e. Traditional, Online, Blended Learning, and Unschooling (Kulp, 2020)

  • NOTE: In DUYAN’s case, there will still be a teacher-adviser who can provide some support to the parents as the homeschooled children still need to achieve the same quality of education as their Virtual and On-campus counterparts.  The teacher-adviser is still the one preparing the assessments and reports.

Distance Learning (Virtual Campus) – the acquisition of knowledge and skills through mediated information and instruction, encompassing all technologies and other forms of learning at a distance.

  • Teachers provide teaching and learning resources that are independent of real time contact with their students. These teaching resources may take a variety of forms including web sites, computer mediated communications (such as e-mail and Internet conferencing), printed materials, audio/video files, digital databases, CD-ROMs, and television broadcasts. (Robinson, n.d.)

In short, in Homeschooling, the parents are the Primary Teachers and the School Teachers only provide a limited support; whereas in Distance Education, it is the other way around.

As far as tuition is concerned, in general, Homeschooling provides the most cost-effective system whereas Distance Education costs somewhere between Homeschooling and Traditional School.  Pls. see our school fees below for comparison.

Thank you!
